Queering the Past
Online Symposium – same sex relationships in the 17th century
Fulke Greville, Lord Brooke was a famous courtier, poet and owner of Warwick Castle. He is also remembered as the friend and biographer of quintessential Elizabethan gentleman, Sir Philip Sidney. Greville’s deep affection for Sidney is evident in both his writing and his actions – but what conclusions can be drawn about their relationship from the perspective of the 21st century?
What evidence exists for same sex relationships in the 17th century? Our speakers will be exploring this topic through personal and legal records, mainly focussing on male relationships. This will be followed by a discussion and an opportunity to submit questions.
Matthew Storey, collections curator at Historic Royal Palaces will compere, and our speakers include Dr Paul Hunneyball, Dr Fiona McCall, Jon Sleigh and Dr Rictor Norton.
